Whenever I think of holiday food, I always think of cranberries as one of my favorites. I love cranberry sauce, cranberry relish, cranberry muffins, and everything else you can make with them.
I think they’re incredibly beautiful and I love their super tart-tangy flavor. This is why, when I saw this Roasted Cranberry
Sauce on Bon Appétit’s Instagram feed the other day, I immediately knew I had to make it since it combines my favorite cooking method (roasting) with one of my favorite holiday ingredients (cranberry).
Unfortunately, there are still fairly high prices on cranberries right now, which is why I decided to swap half of the cranberries for apples (it was more than half apples, really) and change up the seasonings to make the dish taste like an apple pie.
I am really pleased with the results. I have created a thick, jam-like side dish for Thanksgiving that has a tremendous amount of flavor and depth. It is a bit similar to a chutney in taste.

Roasted Apple Cranberry Relish: How to Serve It
So, if you are like me, and you don’t really participate in Thanksgiving or big holiday dinners, you can still use this amazing roasted apple cranberry relish almost anywhere you would use a jam and it will make your cooking experience that much more enjoyable.
My favorite way to eat it is on bagels with cream cheese (it tasted like cranberry cheese cake! ), or you can do it as an appetizer over goat cheese. Or you can make a delightful baked brie that will impress all your friends at any holiday party (pile the relish on a wheel of brie, wrap the brie in puff pastry, and bake it to golden brown).).
If you prefer, feel free to use it to top grilled meats. It would be wonderful with chicken, but fruit compote always goes well with pork. I’m thinking it would be awesome for my herb roasted pork loin!
It’s that time of year again when it comes to cooking up a super fall-inspired oven-roasted apple cranberry relish that’s good for a lot more than just Thanksgiving!
Roasted Apple Cranberry Relish
As a thick, jam-like condiment, Roasted Apple Cranberry Relish is a versatile condiment that is used in a wide variety of ways, including on Christmas lunch tables.
Servings: 2 cups
- 12 oz bag fresh cranberries ($2.79)
- 3 medium apples* (about 1.5 lbs.) ($2.58)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar ( $0.32)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon ($0.05)
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves ($0.03)
- 1 tsp lemon juice ( $0.02)
- I recommend that you preheat the oven to 350oF and wash the cranberries first. Place the washed cranberries in a large 8×13-inch casserole dish (2-3 quarts dish) with the cranberries on top. Peel, core, and chop the apples into cubes approximately the same size as the cranberries. Sprinkle the cubed apples over the cranberries.
- Toss the apples and cranberries together with the brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and lemon juice until all of the ingredients are well combined. Now add the brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and lemon juice.
- When the fruit has been roasted in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, the mixture should be thick and jam-like in texture. In the meantime, stir the mixture once at 30 minutes, and then again at 45 minutes to see if it is ready. Taste the relish and adjust the sugar or lemon juice if needed. Serve immediately or refrigerate for later use.
*My suggestion to you would be to use a sweet or sweet-tart apple variety, but to avoid varieties that are very tart are granny smiths or nectarines. I used Gala apples, which are fairly tart, because they were the best price at the market at the time. The sweetness of the dish can be adjusted according to your preference.

How to Make Roasted Cranberry Relish – Step by Step Photos
You can do this by preheating the oven to 350oF. The cranberries should be washed and placed in a casserole dish measuring 8×13 inches (or 2-3 quarts).
Peel, core, and dice three medium apples (about 1.5 lbs.) Try to make the pieces of the apples about the same size as the cranberries. Place the apples in the dish with the cranberries.
You may choose a sweet apple or a sweet-tart apple for this dish, but you should choose one of these varieties. The sweetness of the dish can be adjusted after it has been baked.
As you can see from my recipe, I used Gala apples since they are fairly tart, but I chose them not because of their quality or price, but because of the best price and quality I found at the market on that day.
The apples and cranberries need to be mixed with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of cloves, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, then the ingredients need to be tossed so that everything is evenly combined.
If the fruit is not cooked enough, you can adjust the amount of sugar or lemon juice. Bake it for 45-55 minutes until it turns into a thick jam-like mixture.
After about 30 minutes, stir the fruit once again, and then at 45 minutes to determine whether it is done. If necessary, adjust the sugar or lemon juice after baking.
There is nothing better than a thick, rich relish that you can present to your guests at Thanksgiving, and this relish is thick, aromatic, and absolutely delightful! It makes about 2 cups, since the fruit shrivels as it roasts, so I recommend doubling this recipe if you are making it for a crowd.
Although I am not able to share this goodness with anyone else, I am able to keep it for myself.
