There are times when I just really need a side dish, and I prefer to serve them as simple as possible. I prefer one-dish meals instead of the traditional “main and two sides” structure because I like to save time and effort. It is my goal not only to save effort and effort, but I also do not want to upstage my main dish with too many dishes.

The reason why I love simple recipes like these Chili Roasted Sweet Potatoes so much is because they are simple, easy to follow, and serve a purpose.

It’s really nothing more, nothing less, just the right thing to do.

Let’s discover the following recipe with Apronese.

Easy Chili Flavored Roasted Sweet Potatoes

How to Season Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are naturally very sweet, which is a perfect combination with the mild, earthy flavor of the chili powder.

When I cook them, I use a mild chili powder blend along with an extra pinch of salt. That’s it! The natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes perfectly balances the mild earthy flavor of the chili powder, while a little salt always adds character to the dish.

What Kind of Chili Powder is Best?

As a rule of thumb, I use McCormick’s chili powder because it has very little salt and has no heat at all. You should check the ingredients of any chili powder you intend to use, adjust the salt as necessary, and/or be prepared for some heat.

There are a lot of different brands of chili powder out there, and some are quite spicy, while others aren’t. If you use either kind, it will be just as delicious with sweet potatoes as it will with mild ones.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes: What to Serve with Them

In my recipe for Cumin Lime Chicken Drumsticks, I made Chili Roasted Sweet Potatoes to serve with the chicken.

They both cooked at the same time as the chicken so all was done at one time. They both complemented each other perfectly in color and flavor.

Everything just went together so well that it was almost unbelievable how well it worked out.

Prep Time: 10 mins/ Cook Time: 45 mins/ Total Time: 55 mins

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. sweet potatoes ($2.08)
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder* ($0.30)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil ($0.24)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (or to taste) ($0.02)

Ingredients

  • Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • The sweet potatoes should be washed and purged, then cut into 1/2″ cubes. Place the cubed sweet potatoes into a large bowl and then drizzle the olive oil, chili powder, and salt over the sweet potatoes. Stir well until the potatoes are well coated with the oil and spices.
  • In order to make sure that the sweet potatoes are cooked evenly, you need to spread them out in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. In the preheated oven, roast the potatoes for 45 minutes, stirring once halfway through the roasting process. The sweet potatoes should be soft and slightly browned on the edges after the 45-minute cooking period. However, the amount of time your potatoes will require depends on their size.

How to Roast Sweet Potatoes – Step by Step Photos

Sweet Potatoes whole on a wooden cutting board
The sweet potatoes should be washed and shaved (about 2 pounds total).Preheat the oven to 400 F (208 C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place them in the oven.
Peeled and cubed sweet potatoes on a wooden cutting board
As an alternative method to cutting the sweet potatoes into cubes, you can cut them into slices equal to 1/2 inch thick and then slice them cross-wise into cubes.

The easiest way to do this is to first cut the potatoes into slices equal to 1/2 inch thick.
Chili Powder bottle
You can prepare the potatoes by adding 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt to them.

The sauce I use is McCormick’s chili powder, which is very mild and contains very little salt, as well as a lot of spice.

There are many brands of sweet potatoes that contain cayenne or another spicy chili, so make sure you are aware that you could end up with some spicy sweet potatoes if yours is one that has cayenne or another spicy chili in it.

Additionally, if you use a chili powder that contains more salt, you may need to cut or eliminate the salt in the recipe as well.
Seasoned sweet potato cubes in a glass bowl
After combining the spices and oil, toss the sweet potatoes with the mixture until they have been thoroughly coated.

You’ll be able to taste the sweet potatoes when they’re soft and slightly browned on the edges after 45 minutes of roasting in a preheated oven.

After 45 minutes, stir them once about half way through, and they’ll be ready. If necessary, add more salt to taste.

In addition to adding a little cilantro to my Chili Roasted Sweet Potatoes, I added a little cilantro from the Cilantro Lime Chicken to bring out a little more flavor in the photos.

However, cilantro is definitely not necessary to make these sweet potatoes a mouthwatering experience.
