Because of this, simple recipes like these chili roasted sweet potatoes are so great because they are easy to make and serve their purpose.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes: How to Season Them
This recipe is easy to prepare, but I used a mild chili powder blend along with just a little salt to season the sweet potatoes.
That’s actually all they need–just salt and a touch of sweetness to accent the mild, earthy flavor of the chili powder. Adding a pinch of salt always brings out the flavors even more.
What Kind of Chili Powder is Best?
Using McCormick’s chili powder is a good choice, since it is free from heat and is very low in salt. If you are using another brand, make sure to check the ingredients and adjust the salt, if necessary, and/or be prepared for a little heat.
There are different types of chili powder, so make sure to check the ingredients before using it. Some chili powder is spicy and others aren’t, so either one will work equally well with sweet potatoes.
Roasted Sweet Potatoes: What to Serve with Them
In addition to the cumin lime chicken drumsticks that I roasted in the oven at the same time, I made chili roasted sweet potatoes to go along with them.
All the components cooked at the same time in the oven, making everything done all at once, and they were the perfect complement to each other in terms of color and flavor. The whole thing just came together so beautifully.
Chili Roasted Sweet Potatoes
Whether you are serving a southwest inspired meal, or just want something delicious for a weeknight meal, Chili Roasted Sweet Potatoes are a great side dish. They are perfect for busy weeknight dinners.
- 2 lbs. sweet potatoes ($2.08)
- 1 Tbsp chili powder* ($0.30)
- 2 Tbsp olive oil ($0.24)
- 1/4 tsp salt (or to taste) ($0.02)
- The oven needs to be preheated to 400°F, and a baking sheet needs to be lined with aluminum foil.
- It is very important to wash and peel the sweet potatoes before you cut them into 1/2 inch cubes, then place them into a large bowl, drizzle some olive oil over them, and sprinkle with chili powder and salt. Make sure the sweet potatoes are well coated in oil and spices.
- Put the seasoned sweet potatoes on a baking sheet and spread them evenly so they are in a single layer on it. The sweet potatoes will need to be baked for 45 minutes, stirring once halfway through. When the potatoes have been baked for 45 minutes, they should be soft and slightly brown on the edges. The total amount of time necessary to cook the potatoes will ultimately depend on how big your cubes are.

How to Roast Sweet Potatoes – Step by Step Photos
I am going to be peeling two sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs total) and cooking them in the oven at 400 degrees F on a foil-lined baking sheet for about 20 minutes.
In order to make the sweet potatoes cubes, cut them into 1/2-inch cubes. The easiest way to do this is to first slice the sweet potatoes into slices that are 1/2 inch thick, and then cut those slices cross-wise into cubes.
Using two tablespoons of olive oil, one tablespoon of chili powder, and one quarter teaspoon salt, you can place the cubed potatoes in a large bowl and stir in.
Using McCormick’s chili powder, which is mild and very low in salt, makes this dish really tasty.
However, every brand is different, so you need to be aware that if yours contains cayenne or a spicy chili, the sweet potatoes might taste spicy. You may also need to reduce or eliminate the salt listed in the ingredients section if your chili powder contains more salt than I have listed.
Once the sweet potatoes have been coated in the oil and spices, stir the sweet potatoes until they are evenly coated.
You must roast the sweet potatoes in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, stir once around half way through and remove from the oven when they are soft and slightly browned around the edges. Taste the potatoes and adjust the salt amount if necessary.
It’s likely that you don’t need to add any cilantro to these Chili Roasted Sweet Potatoes because I will be using it from the Cilantro Lime Chicken anyway.
But I think you try it just for the color in the photos, and because I had some on hand. The cilantro isn’t essential for making these sweet potatoes mouthwatering, though.
