What Is the Number of Burgers This Recipe Makes?
As you can see from the recipe below, it makes six decent-sized black bean burgers. Don’t worry if you don’t get through all six of them within a few days, they’re freezer friendly.
Note: The recipe and price breakdown listed below are only for the black bean burger. In my opinion, everyone likes a burger that has a little different flavor and texture, so I did not include the buns and toppings in the recipe and price breakdown.
Are They Freezer-Friendly?
The recipe below shows how to cook two of the patties for just myself, and how to freeze the rest. Once the raw patties are wrapped in plastic wrap and sealed in a zip top freezer bag, you are able to cook them later.
Simply thaw the patties for 30 seconds in the microwave, then cook them in a skillet according to the instructions.
Toppings for Black Bean Burgers?
There are so many toppings you could choose from. I chose mustard, tomato, lettuce, and red onion. If you wanted to do a southwest spin, add chipsotle mayo, cheddar cheese, and jalapenos.
How about a BBQ version with BBQ sauce and pepper jack cheese?
A few avocado slices with any of the above themes would also be great. Don’t forget to add Comeback Sauce.
How Spicy Are These Black Bean Burgers?
Although these black bean burgers contain sriracha as a ingredient, I do not find them to be a lot spicy at all. The sriracha adds just another subtle layer of flavor to these burgers.
In order to make your black bean burger spicy, you can double the amount of sriracha, or add a little jalapeo to your food processor as you are processing the ingredients.
Do I Have to Use a Food Processor?
The black bean burgers can be made without a food processor, but it is a lot easier to make them with one. It’s just that the red onion, garlic, and sriracha need to be finely minced by hand before you make them.
To make the burgers without the food processor, you just have to finely mince these ingredients by hand. To make it easy to mix everything together, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher, and then stir everything together.
Can I Bake Them?
You do not have to bake the black bean burgers in order to get a nice browning on the outside of the burger. This will enhance the flavor and texture of the meat and provide an added layer of flavor and texture.
Can I Skip the Egg?
I tried to make these black bean burgers without the egg, but despite my best efforts, they just don’t hold together in the skillet (according to the picture on the right, they look more like refried beans when they go into the skillet). You may be able to use a flaxseed egg replacer, but I have not done any research on this.
It is interesting to note that this black bean burger recipe is essentially a variation of my Homemade Falafel recipe, which I think is one of the best foods I have ever tasted.
Homemade Black Bean Burgers
These homemade black bean burgers are made with black beans, cumin, sriracha, garlic, and fresh red onion, making them a delicious and hearty vegetarian meal that is sure to satisfy you.
- 2 15oz. cans black beans ($0.96)
- 1/4 red onion ($0.11)
- 1 clove garlic ($0.08)
- 1/4 bunch fresh cilantro* ($0.20)
- 1 Tbsp sriracha ($0.11)
- 1 Tbsp mayonnaise ($0.09)
- 1 tsp ground cumin ($0.10)
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce ($0.09)
- 1/4 tsp pepper ($0.03)
- 1 large egg ($0.23)
- 1 cup plain breadcrumbs ($0.26)
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil ($0.08)
- The black beans need to be rinsed and drained. Add the black beans and various other ingredients to a food processor along with the red onion, garlic, cilantro, sriracha, mayonnaise, cumin, soy sauce, and pepper. Pulse the mixture until the ingredients come together evenly, but things are still slightly chunky.
- In a large bowl, mix together one large egg with 1 cup of breadcrumbs, and then transfer the mixture to a bowl with the vegetable mixture. Stir the ingredients together, ensuring that they are evenly combined. Leave the mixture aside for five minutes, then serve.
- The black bean mixture should be divided into six equal portions, and then shaped into a patty, approximately 3.5 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick, by dividing each portion into six equal parts.
- You will need 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to heat in a skillet to make the black bean burgers. As soon as the oil is heated, add some of the black bean burgers to the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are well browned and heated. Continue cooking the rest of the patties until they are all cooked with more oil and the rest of the patties.
- Add your favorite toppings to each bun, place each patty in a bun, and you are ready to enjoy.
*The cilantro can be substituted with parsley if you prefer.

How to Make Black Bean Burgers – Step By Step Photos
Two 15oz. cans of black beans must be rinsed and drained thoroughly before they can be used.
They should also be added to a food processor along with 1/4 cup of red onion, 1/4 clove of garlic, 1/4 bunch of cilantro (about 1/2 cup), 1 tablespoon Sriracha, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon cumin, 1.5 tablespoons soy sauce, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
As you pulse the ingredients together, make sure to leave a little chunk to make it a little more even. I like to leave a little chunk to make it a little more chunky.
The black bean mixture should be added to the large bowl along with one egg and 1 cup of bread crumbs and mixed well.
As soon as the black bean mixture has been added, the breadcrumbs and eggs should be stirred in. After about five minutes, I like to let this mixture sit for a few minutes for the breadcrumbs to absorb some of the moisture from the black beans.
It is suggested that you divide the mixture into six equal portions and shape them into patties (just over 1/2 cup of mixture per patty, about 3.5 inches in diameter, and 1/2 inch thick).
You will need to heat a skillet over medium with a bit of cooking oil, then add a couple of patties. When the oil is hot, add a couple of patties and fry them for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely browned and hot.
Then repeat the process with more oil and patties until your desired number is cooked (or freeze them, you can find instructions on how to freeze in the information above the recipe).
