There Are Many Uses for One Sauce

There are so many uses for pizza sauce that it goes far beyond pizzas! My new go-to red sauce is this super thick and rich sauce. It’s perfect for meatball subs, eggplant and chicken parmesan, or just to dip breadsticks. It’s a quick, easy, all-purpose red sauce. You can use it for many other great things as well as for pizza. What Is the Yield of This Sauce?

Basically, this recipe makes three cups of sauce, which makes three large pizzas, 12 appetizers, or six pizza sandwiches. The sauce freezes very well, so you might want to consider freezing some of it so you won’t have to make another batch the next time you feel like making a pizza.

Is It Possible to Freeze Pizza Sauce?

Definitely! If you are making too much sauce for just one meal, you can freeze the remaining sauce. I suggest using a quart sized freezer bag.

If it’s too thick for your taste, you can use a quart sized freezer bag. If you wish to reheat the sauce, you simply tear away the freezer bag and put it into a sauce pot. If the sauce is not hot enough, stir it frequently and heat over low heat.

Thick Rich Homemade Pizza Sauce

If you would like to make your own pizza sauce at home with just a few pantry staples, you can do so quickly with this Thick and Rich Pizza Sauce Recipe. You can use it right away, or freeze it for later use.

Prep Time: 5 mins/ Cook Time: 20 mins/ Total Time: 25 mins

Servings: 3 cups


  • 2 Tbsp olive oil ($0.26)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced ($0.08)
  • 1 28oz. can crushed tomatoes ($1.47)
  • 1 6oz. can tomato paste ($0.59)
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar ($0.05)
  • 3/4 tsp salt ($0.05)
  • 1 tsp dried basil ($0.10)
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano ($0.05)
  • Freshly cracked black pepper ($0.05)
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper (optional) ($0.02)


  • Over medium heat, add the olive oil and garlic to a sauce pot and cook for 1-2 minutes, or just until the garlic is soft and fragrant, or until the garlic has turned golden brown in color.
  • In a large bowl, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, basil, oregano, a pinch of red pepper flakes, some freshly cracked pepper (10-15 cranks of a pepper mill), as well as some freshly cracked pepper (10-15 cranks). Stir together well.
  • The pot should be covered as soon as it starts simmering, then the heat should be reduced to low, and the pot should simmer for 15 minutes minimum, but up to 30 minutes (I often leave them simmering while I prepare my pizza dough).

It is recommended to freeze this sauce by allowing it to cool in the refrigerator completely, then transfer it to freezer-safe resealable containers or quart-size freezer bags, and then freeze until it is completely solid. This sauce should be reheated slowly in a sauce pot with a lid to reduce evaporation while stirring often until it is heated up.

How to Make Homemade Pizza Sauce – Step By Step Photos

Garlic and Olive Oil in the sauce potYou will need two tablespoons of olive oil for this dish. Cut up one clove of minced garlic into small pieces. Sauté in 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat for about one to two minutes, or until the garlic is soft and fragrant.

Into the sauce pot, you will need one 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes, one 6oz. can of tomato paste, one-and-a-half tablespoons of sugar, one and a half teaspoons of salt, one teaspoon of dried basil, one and a half teaspoons of dried oregano, fresh cracked pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes.

It is best to stir the ingredients together, place a lid on top, and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes. As soon as it begins simmering, turn the heat down to low and let it simmer for no more than 15 minutes (I sometimes let it simmer longer while I’m preparing the pizza dough, and it becomes even sweeter and deeper as I do it).
